Five Tips to Ease College Application Panic
By Alexandra Robbins, author of The overachievers
Recently I returned to my old high school student during the college application for a book about the pressure on today's students (and parents) to follow to success. What I found, it reflects what I saw in schools across the country, from Vermont, New Mexico: Panic over admissions. After talking with hundreds of students, parents, licensing authorities and consultants, I have some tips to families through the often stressful time can help put together. (Many more tips and stories of the students I followed, can be found in the over-deliver).
First Ignore the "Rankings"
Several publications claim to universities in that order on an annual basis, lists, students often influence decisions about where to apply rank. These lists are a farce. The rankings have been fixed since they began, when the algorithm for the first U.S. News ranking produced a number-one school, not Harvard, Princeton or Yale, threw the journal of the formula (which rewards diversity) and the statistician who created it . The factors to use the many publications to schools today are not necessarily affect the current undergraduate experience – and at many universities, to cheat on their data, anyway.
Second Do not talk
Often students and parents are satisfied with their lists scores, SAT scores and college applications. . . until they talk to other students and parents and are found in the comparison game. Several students told me they decided not to a particular school which she loved only application because it would not sound impressive, when people asked where they apply and go to college. Do not talk about your own or your children's statistics – and not ask about other "- takes a huge load off my shoulders.
Third Pare down activities
Many students pile on extra-curricular activities in order to add lines to their college resume, sacrificing sleep and free time in the process. But licensing authorities with whom I spoke said they would prefer that the students only one or two activities that really interest to commit.
4th Understand this name is not Reflect Ability
Much of the frenzy over college admissions arises from the belief that brands deliver the best possible education and schools immediate stepping stone to success. This is a myth. Studies have shown that the result does not increase with a degree from an elite school and in 2005 the number of S & P 500 CEOs who had graduated from Harvard matched the number of had graduated from the University of Wisconsin.
5th Accept that no personal Admissions
Too many families are admissions letter day as the Day of Judgement, as if an acceptance or rejection offered some sort of personal commentary. In fact, photographs are a numbers game, that most students can not be beat. The competition is so stiff that the difference between a "Congratulations" and a "Sorry …" can be as simple as the fact that the school orchestra, a French horn player needs. Admissions officers told me that every season it to turn down a large number of students who are exceptionally qualified to attend their school.
The bottom line is that there are more than 2,500 four-year colleges in the U.S., in addition to many fantastic schools abroad. Most of these schools would fall over backwards to admit to a decent school. The idea is that the quality of education at schools branded by leaps and bounds over other schools is wrong. So relaxing. It's okay to not get caught in the frenzy. The focus on individual interests and spend time doing things for luck's sake rather than for CV-lines make sure that everything will work just fine.
