How many laughs have "I Love Lucy" You may over the years? More than once you remember it, I bet. And it's the best kind of laughter, deep, belly laughs, the kind that take over your body as you do not stop crying. Such laughter is good for the mind and the soul, but literally washes worries and troubles.

Madelyn Pugh Davis was the chairman of genius, these laughs come weeks after week, to the delight of the nation. Her name appeared as co-author for every single episode of the series, from 15 By 6 October 1951 May 1957 ran. It was an incredible achievement. Not least, because Davis was a very successful writer in the male-dominated medium of network television.

** Think about appearing on the episode in which Lucy battles a giant loaf of bread from the oven and pressed her against the wall? A classic …

Madelyn Pugh Davis knew how to work the premise of the show and its four main characters for maximum comic effect.

"I Love Lucy" was not particularly innovative – the mad housewife, the irritated man, the oddball friends. What has the innovative program was the commitment of the four main characters to do anything for a laugh … and the irrepressible ingenuity of the script. In other words, Madelyn Pugh Davis and the other important members of the team: Her longtime writing partner Bob Carroll Jr., Jess Oppenheimer, the producer. Writers Bob Schiller and Bob Weiskopf joined the team later.

** What about this classic? Remember Lucy slipping and sliding into a vat while mashing grapes? It was hysterical.

The four main characters.

Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, married in real life, were married in the program, even as Lucy and Ricky Ricardo. Your friends are Fred and Ethel Mertz.

Lucy was a scatterbrained housewife mad desire for a career in the entertainment industry, for all that she had no talent. Ricky was a Cuban bandleader, as he was in real life, a typical Latin cook quickly, sometimes misunderstood, but always according to Lucy, who he loves (not the case for this is roaming Latin lover in real life.)

Fred (William Frawley) was a grump, played ultra-tight with the penny, but a man of the theater itself to vaudeville, together with his wife Ethel (Vivian Vance.)

The task of the writing staff was to sign (known to virtually every American) fresh by keeping them in the middle of a side-splitting funny situation after another. These situations, especially for Lucy involved some very tricky slapstick comedy. Lucille Ball, an international star, might have been expected to make heavy weather of some of these scenes ("they are right for my picture?"), But in fact what Madelyn Pugh Davis wrote, was Lucille Ball .. . no matter how difficult … as a matter of professional pride. This attitude permeated all the actors and their incomparable team.

** What is the result of 1955? It centered on Lucy's humiliating encounter with beautiful Hollywood actor William Holden. Holden she accidentally sets fire to fake nose … and is by dipping the nose into his teacup.

The most watched show in the United States in four of the six seasons.

"I Love Lucy," is based on Davis and teams as well as just plain funny scripts, was very popular from the start. What's more, unlike other series that started hot and because of the weak scripts run in the sand, diminished the quality of the scripts before. They were good in the first episode, they were good in the past.

The problem with "I Love Lucy" was the seething personal relationships, always likely to rise in flames. Desi Arnaz liked the ladies, the more the better. He was Cuban and thought rampant, careless infidelity of his birth right. Lucille Ball was not in agreement.

The relationship between William Frawley and Vivian Vance was also toxic, they could hardly stand to be in the same room together, not least because of Mr. Frawley was all too accurate put-down. He once said Vance body was like a "sack of doorknobs." It was rough … it was unforgettable … it was funny. No doubt some of these (funny, spectators) voltage was slipped into the script to increase the effect. Davis would have seen the humorous aspect and run with it … Increase of laughter.

** Do you remember this one because … All-time favorite: Lucy and Ethel in this show in 1952, land jobs in a chocolate factory, only to have the conveyor belt kick into overdrive.

Madelyn Pugh wrote and wrote … ascending the ladder one (mostly funny) word at a time.

Pugh (her maiden name) was born in Indianapolis and graduated in 1942 from Indiana University. Because of the Second World War women had a crack at jobs usually reserved for men, like the radio staff writer landed position. It is important to use the primacy of the radios in those days. It was the primary form of communication, virtually every family had one. Pugh was talented, hardworking and ambitious. They soon moved to a CBS affiliate in Los Angeles.

"My Favorite Husband."

At CBS, she met long-time writing partner Bob Carroll Jr. Together they worked on several shows, including "It's a great life's work" with Steve Allen … and "My Favorite Husband", with …… Lucille Ball The pieces that were soon to bring to America the laughter still in its infancy, and get together. "I Love Lucy 'was the result … America took the program to his heart immediately and their unique use of three cameras changed an industry and launched a thousand sitcoms, many by Desilu Productions.

And remember … There was never, never a vulgar word, a cruel put-down, a prejudiced bigot, or racist comment. It was literally and grateful good clean Fun.

Madelyn Pugh Davis, as she was at her wedding, has been widely recognized, honored and celebrated.

In 2007, called the publication Television Week, becoming one of the 25 most influential people who shaped the industry and notes that it was a major writer 180 on all the "I Love Lucy" episodes and 13 specials on CBS from 1951 to 1961.

She was a happy woman no doubt, happiness as the attitude of the desired goal and working his tail off to get it defined. A woman of gaiety, laughter, merriment was highly deadly serious about it. And we, in our often bitter times that cry out for a bit of good humor, the better for this lady.

** Just one more. Who remembers the Vitameatavegamin episode where Lucy gets drunk to put together filming a commercial for this alcohol patent medicine? One of the best … But then that's the only thing, Madelyn Pugh Davis delivered. That's why, after six seasons, "I Love Lucy" ended its run at the top of the Nielsen ratings, the first program to do so.

+ + Mrs. Davis and Bob Carroll Jr. Co-authors of "Laughing With Lucy: My Life with America's Leading Lady of Comedy". (2005). Check it out.
