Ohio, like many states, is an increasing need for skilled health care workers as the Baby Boomer population continues to age. In fact, the national turnover rate for registered nurses, 14.4 percent in 2008 with a 4.9 percent vacancy, according to the Ohio Hospital Association.

Ohio University School of Nursing is working to fight this trend by providing access to affordable education through distance learning revived, that the purchase opportunity for the RN working in a bachelor's degree offers.

"If you update your training, you more valuable to your employer," said Mary Bowen, director and executive associate dean of Ohio University School of Nursing. "There are more opportunities for job growth and promotion," added she, and job satisfaction is often increased, along with other factors, the employees happy and increase to maintain productivity. The school's online RN to BSN program to benefit students and enrich the health care system by offering nurses the opportunity to earn a bachelor's degree from home reviewed in 12 months.

The degree plan for students who have completed requirements designed comprises 12 courses that can be taken online from home. Anyone can be completed in five weeks by viewing lecture videos and participate in online discussion forums. Students can begin the program during one of eight start dates during a single year.

"We wanted to improve our outreach to all of Ohio and neighboring states," says Bowen. "Since we were already in the process of redesigning our curriculum, we wanted to improve our platform, to increase the flexibility and access to the curriculum."

The university faculty working with online distance learning providers, Higher Ed Holdings, move the newly updated courses by faculty members, an enhanced platform. Higher Ed Holdings will provide the technology by which the nursing courses will be distributed to hundreds, possibly thousands of RNs in the coming years. The use of the technology platform will enable Ohio University nursing courses for registered nurses in the region.

The Ohio University School of Nursing has offered various distance learning courses since 1975 and has an online RN to BSN program for about six years ago with a different format. But Bowen said that it was the motivation behind this new version of the nursing school's progress in revising the curriculum to the latest standards of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

"There are many new trends, the health care in the community that our graduates must be prepared to happen," said Bowen.

To meet the current club Baccalaureate essential documents, "the curriculum has been updated to the capabilities of the 21 Century reflect health needs. Bowen has the stronger emphasis on genetics and genomics, holistic patient-centered care, evidence-based patient care, implementation of end-of-Life Care Issues, emergency preparedness and disaster response to environmental factors. A change in the time frame

Ohio University School of Nursing Professor Kathy Rose Grippa stated that the school determined it was essential to update the length of the offered online courses there. The courses that were previously available on a ten-week program was shortened to a five-week schedule. Grippa says is the expectation that students take a course at a time.

"The students take the same number of courses," Grippa said, "but the advantage of the five-week schedule, a course at a time is that you can focus and concentrate on us, that certain content is permitted."

He adds, from a technical point of view, Grippa, a change was overdue. The technology has advanced much more than six years, "she explains." Market requirements

Bowen added that the RN to BSN program was also tailored to the requirements of the market.

She added that the Ohio University School of Nursing is committed to helping students thrive in the system.

"We really want to prepare a flexible, affordable training to provide associate degree or diploma nurses," says Bowen. "And over 90 percent of nurses in Southeastern Ohio are ready for the staff in degree-level care. This will be the opportunity to further their education in a quality and cost effective manner."

In maintaining the objectives of the program, the school can help their students the best means to help themselves to equip them.
