Ely, Minnesota serves as a gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, which go beyond the Canada-US border. A museum in Ely celebrated the life of a remarkable woman, Dorothy Molter, known as the Root Beer Lady. For over fifty years she has lived on the Isle of Pines Resort on Knife Lake. A registered nurse, she tended to the physical and psychological needs of canoeists, which she attended. They provided food, shelter and their famous root beer, bottling over 11,000 bottles per year. For many years, canoeists would come to see them as they paddled the lakes of northern Minnesota.

In 1964, the Wilderness Act condemned and bought their property by the United States Forest Service. A cry of protest among the thousands of their friends whom they had befriended. The U.S. government allowed her lease for her life's work. But she could not run their business as a spa. She placed user root beer and gave it to the thirsty: a two-bottle limit. She also has a hostel for those who wanted it. Of course, there was no fee. But in return for their kindness, leaving each with a donation. This allowed here to live the life she was accustomed to live.

She had no power. They lived 30 miles from the nearest road. She traveled to Ely for supplies by canoe in summer than four portages. In winter, they could do with a snowmobile. Snowmobile use is stopped when the Forest Service prohibited motors in the Boundary Waters. With wood and sometimes propane, as it was delivered cooked. She made thousands of Christmas decorations, which she gave as gifts. In return, her friends painted paddle for them, which they used as a fence. She pulled the top soil so that they could plant flowers, an unusual sight on the island. She continued her root beer bottle.

A great story about the root beer lady is that they have a dog that had loved the sea chase aircraft. One day was also one of the propeller to close. Both broke the arm and the dog's jaw. The pilot wanted to destroy her dog, but Dorothy Molter said, "No. I am a nurse, and I will take care of him!.." She made a splint made of birch bark and fastened it to the dog mandible. After a few weeks the dog jaw was healed. From this time it had a slightly crooked jaw, and never hunted again levels. The propeller is on display at the museum.

After her death in 1986 at the age of 79, she took a lot of friends from Ely their homes and all their possessions and created the Dorothy Molter Museum in Ely. They continue to produce their root beer, the proceeds go to the upkeep of the museum. A trip to Ely requested a visit to Dorothy Molter Museum. Expect to spend two hours there, being impressed by this fascinating woman. While buying a six-pack of root beer.

A few blocks away are the International Wolf Center. Learn more about the importance of wolves and their interaction with humanity. A large exhibition, wolves and humans is under construction. Here on a two-acre site six wolves live and interact with each other and with people. There are currently two adult wolves and four younger Arctic timber wolves. All are raised in captivity and with man since puppyhood been socialized before they introduced into the package. A viewing window allows visitors to interact with each other and wolves.

Many programs are open to the public. Movies are shown every hour in the theater. Lectures by faculty will be given before the scene. The staff works hard for the many prejudices that we fight about wolves and their behavior. Feeding is done on Saturday night. An additional fee will be participating in this feedings. Workshops, guided tours behind the scenes and summer camps are also available.

On the opposite side of the city, the North American Bear Center. The population consists of two males and one female black bear. Ted, which is a little overweight, loves to lounge in front of the window and pose for photos. The other two are more withdrawn. The center is out of the way man has overcome the prejudices of the bear. Forty-three video shows different behaviors who teach, including cam cameras in their cave, while they are hibernating. The main movie will be shown in movie called "The Man Who Walks with Bears." It describes the years of dedication to Lynn Rogers, Ph.D. has to live and work with black bears. He has found them gentle giants and accept him as one of the family. The center has a children's area, indoor and outdoor viewing area, hands-on activities.

A short distance from the Soudan Underground Mine city is the State Park Journey ½ mile for a subway 90 minutes tour of the mine and mining history and techniques. Also take the same journey in exploring the high-energy physics Tour.

Sudan is the oldest Minnesota iron mine was opened in 1882. It is the deepest down ½ mile into the earth. The visitor does the same two-story elevator that took the miners to work the mines. Guided tours given every hour through the mine all day. The ambient temperature is 50? Q. So you bring a warm jacket and sturdy shoes.

The high-energy physics tour is a must for geeks. Sudan was elected by the University of Minnesota because of the absence of cosmic interference from other atmospheric particles, which appear on the surface. About 2,400 meters under the ground the interference is greatly reduced. There are currently three experiments performed. They are:

For 25 years The MINOS (Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search) Far Detector is a 6,000-ton particle-tracking device that the observation of neutrinos at Fermilab, which is near Chicago, is sent almost 500 miles away. The goal of MINOS is precisely to determine mass differences between neutrinos, 3 of the 12 basic building blocks of matter. You want to see if changing the neutrinos during their journey. They are divided into three types: Electron neutrinos, muon neutrinos and tau neutrinos. The scientists at the Soudan isolate the muon neutrino by Fermi Lab near Chicago and see if the flavor of tau or electron beam has changed. Another Far detector is seen at a distance of Sudan, whether that neutrinos change the more they built to travel.

The CDMS 2 (Cryogenic Dark Matter Search) detector operates at near absolute zero, to traces of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) that a significant proportion could be the dark matter search. It is the coldest place on Earth. This facility is not open to the public to obey because of the strict rules at this temperature must adhere. The theory is that the colder an object is less movement. If something is introduced to the object that shows the difference in motion a rise in temperature and thus a certain weight. This is very confusing for a mere mortal like me, but speaks volumes for physicists.

LBCF (Low Background Counting Facility) is now under installation on Sudan, a number of highly sensitive detectors for use by the science and technology community for design, testing, prototyping and calibration of scientific and technical purposes.

Ely is a special place: a small name, but a large heart of the city. Come and enjoy the far north. Be like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz: bears, wolves, and root beer and neutrinos. Oh My!
