5.0 out of 5 stars differently and better, 11 June 2009

I have both a Kindle and Kindle 2 owned, so I am already committed to the fundamental idea: e-ink reading in a slim form factor with excellent connectivity to a wide range of books and subscriptions. I have come to rely on my Kindle experience, and it is seriously enhanced my reading.
The DX was not the ideal upgrade for me, but two functions has me over the edge: the larger screen, and the native PDF reader. I now have the DX in my hands, and can PROS, CONS report and neutrals:
PRO:
– The larger screen is a definite plus. I use the larger font size on my Kindle 2 (old eyes), and in this type size I get a lot more text per page on the DX. The more experience of reading the whole book-like (and should make a blessing for the people who buy the books in large print.)
– The screen is sharper and sharper than my Kindle 2 in a side-by-side comparison, the text is darker and the contrast is much better, giving a total for better visibility.
– On a side note, the larger screen also makes it possible to read poetry on the Kindle, even with large font sizes. On previous inflamed, cut off the small screen lines, so you lose your mind when the writer end of the line. On the DX, you can see the whole line exactly as the poet meant, with the cut-off to the right place.
– The PDF reader works as advertised, and is extremely favorable. PDF documents appear exactly on the DX as they do on a computer screen. You can also drag and drop your files directly to the device via the USB cable (or use the fee-for-a e-mail if you must.) The only drawback, at least for the documents I 've used, I can not style of writing as I can with native Kindle documents.
– Screen rotation works as announced: it works as a mild set on both graphics and text, and easily offset the downside of not in a position, font size, zoom in PDF files. A nice design touch: the four-way navigation on the Kindle 2, the rotation-sensitive stick introduced and is expected to move as compared to the screen rotation.
– More storage of the device is on the screen devoted to shrink while the white plastic frame around the screen seems to be, both in general and as compared to the screen of plastic, second on the Kindle I like to see this (but below about the keyboard).
– Storage: I like the increase in storage capacity, and do not mind the lack of an external memory card. I see some people have trouble with this, but only those people who either a must) regularly to view PDF documents, totaling more than 3.5 GB of disk space or have to carry b) almost 3500 pounds regularly have at their fingertips. I fall into neither category.
CONS:
– Price: It is expensive, as you can tell pretty quickly. If the larger size, value, and the native PDF reader, these characteristics may justify the 30% premium you pay for the DX on the 2nd Kindle In truth, the DX cost more than the Kindle 2, and a premium of 30% is not unreasonable. But for my money, the price should Amazon Kindle 2 in the drop to 0 or so, and charge 0, or slightly less for the DX. Nevertheless, I bought it and will keep it at that price.
– Unilateral navigation keys: all keys are now on the right side, and no one on the left. I'm a right-handed, so I do not complain, but I found myself with both sides on the 2nd Kindle Lefties have reason to complain, I think.
– One-handed handling: I often read while I walk with my Kindle in one hand, and something else in my other. Because of the key arrangement, it is increasingly difficult to DX.
– Metal-support: I miss the tacky rubber pad on my first Kindle If I put my Kindle to a sloped surface, it remained in place. Not so my Kindle 2 and now my DX. This is not a complaint, the specific as to the DX, but it still is.
Neutral (ie things worth mentioning):
– Weight: The DX is heavier, so noticeable. This is only a problem if, like me, you regularly use to ignite with one hand. . . and even so, it's still doable.
– Keyboard: The keyboard has 4 rows, and 5 is not: in the top row of numbers 1 and 2 of the Kindle in the top row qwerty merged, so the figures are only available now with an Alt key combination. The buttons are vertically thin, so that the entire keyboard is no more than 1 "high (compared to a 1.5" on the Kindle 2). At the same time, the keys themselves are a bit easier to push a bit more prominent than on the 2nd Kindle For someone with big fingers (like me) will this be to use a slightly harder keyboard, but only slightly.
That's all I can see. Overall, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages for me are, and I am satisfied with my purchase. I can now think with my DX documents for work on a regular basis because of the PDF reader. The screen size and screen rotation to make the overall reading experience more immersive.
Overall, the DX feels more like text and less like device, and comes closer to the aim of the Kindle: to disappear for the device, it is only the joy of reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars DX not quite all, 13 June 2009
By Susan Lynn Umpleby "Susan Umpleby" (Ontario, CA USA) – See all my reviews

I had the K1 and K2, and then love them both, so I was very excited about the DX. My plan was to DX at home, and my K2 for the implementation of the whole creation with me. It was not long, but after my DX, the day before yesterday was disappointment set in.
Do not get me wrong, there is a lot about how DX:
1) Pictures are great, if the publisher formats it correctly.
2) Who to complain about the darkness of the text on their K2 (a problem I had never BTW) will be excited by very dark body of the DX's.
3) The ability to rotate the screen is big. Gives you a closer look at things such as maps and graphs.
4) The browser is a bit faster than on the K1 or K2, but that's not much to say – it is still very clunky to use.
5) But pretty good websites on the DX.
6) It is 3500 pounds.
BUT ….. the DX is just not everything. It has disadvantages that are really making me posting again until my 30 days:
1) First and foremost, while it is true that it reads PDFs natively, it's really just a PDF viewer * *. You can not change the font size to be PDFs, links do not work on it, and the ability to enlarge images, not to work on them either. To have better Large fonts on your PDF before you load it. Looking at the PDF in the horizontal mode helps a bit but not much.
2) The DX is too large to hold comfortably. It is not difficult, but it is top heavy and you feel a pull on the hands. And the draw is really evident when you use the keyboard while you try it – you have virtually the DX down flat, it is so difficult to type.
3) merged with the number keys on the QWERTY keyboard (the loss of a number of buttons). What development genius thought it would be helpful, and an "improvement" have, at the ALT key every time you wanted to enter a number? Press!?
4) Before my DX came, I do not think that would bother me at all, but I must say: I hate the fact that the "next page" button is only on one side. I mostly use the left button. And so, with the DX-Ability of the rotation, you can turn it upside down by the "next page" button on the left …. However, if you do this, the button is so high that your hand (not your thumb, have the whole film hand) to turn over a page. May sound NIT-picky, but it's really a PITA stop reading to do. Not only that, but with the keyboard at the top makes it even more top-heavy, as if it up right!
5) When you turn the DX so that it is horizontal, the "next page" button is either the upper or lower end – in any case, you can not change just flick your thumb and the side. Again a pita.
6) If you leave the rotation feature to "Auto" if you do not use your DX It drains the battery, so you have to remember to turn off the function to stop when you read.
7) Still no folders. An organizational nightmare three times greater than that of K2 (which even had the same problem on the increased K1): the possibility of storage of 3,500 pounds, but only in a position to sort them by author, title, and "most recent first .
I will be hotly debated with me the next week or so, if I really want to keep the DX. It is so disappointing. It has the potential to become a really great e-reader … but as it stands now, it is not. It's OK. But is much more than just OK for 9, it should.

Verified Amazon Purchase (What is this?)
Firmware as of 11/30/2009 UPDATE:
I now have M-edge platform for Kindle Jacket DX (Genuine Leather – Navy Pebble) – Back to School Sale! Kindle because you can set up even on the table next to you or a lap desk stand. This makes it easier to download music, pattern, or just pound (address some user complaints about them as "too difficult" to hold comfortably).
"I was disappointed that since the Kindle automatically enter sleep mode after 5 minutes if you are using the Kindle for reading patterns or music, it at times while you are still working" on a page. However, Amazon comes with a new firmware release … DX is the Kindle now for 20 minutes before it in screen saver mode, which is a big improvement.
In addition, with the new firmware, the possibility of converting PDFs to Kindle format – that the lack of "Zoom" and "Annotation" properties – should address at least there is a workaround for now.
UPDATE on 6/16/2009: The Kindle can only literally saved my career and saved my "backend". I had an interview yesterday and thought I knew where I went. I am not one of the last dinosaurs went on a Garmin and lost. After circling around for a while and more and more uptight about missing my interview, I reminded myself of the browser on the Kindle.
In the K2, the browser was basically unusable because of the size. However, with the DX, I could go on Google Maps, you'll see the address and had my directions in just a few seconds. The map was made very nice and the turn-by-turn directions can be bookmarked and even if my DX was asleep, she awoke nor the direction indicated. THANK YOU KINDLE!
