Legendary journalist Peter Gammons , is leaving to join ESPN Network MLB. Continued other endeavors after the winter meetings. Hopefully Gammons will continue writing for another outlet.

Gammons' departure was announced Tuesday by ESPN and MLB Network could announce his appointment as early as Wednesday, said an official baseball. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because MLB Network had not made the announcement.

When asked about his decision to the winter meetings, Gammons said he could not discuss it until Wednesday.

Gammons joined ESPN in 1989 and became an integral part of its baseball coverage. He wrote for the Boston Globe starting in 1969 and for Sports Illustrated (1976-78, 1986-1990) worked.

"Peter was the best and the brightest in the transition from print to video," ESPN executive vice president John Walsh said in a statement on Tuesday.

The 64-year-old Gammons was 2004 JG Taylor Spink Award for outstanding baseball writing during the 2005 and was honored Hall of Fame ceremony. He signed in October with the Creative Artists Agency.

"My decision to leave ESPN and was at this point in my life in conflict," Gammons said in a statement. "ESPN gave me a lot more than I was and always will be a big part of who I am."

Gammons interviewed Alex Rodriguez before the camera in February, was added when the New York Yankees Slugger with steroids 2001-03 with the Texas Rangers.

In June 2006, Gammons was stricken with a brain aneurysm while driving near his Cape Cod home. He returned later to broadcast three months.
