Sabarimala â? The Holy Pilgrimage

Kerala, the southernmost coastal state of India is the land of holy places and Sabri Mala is one of the pious temple of the state. It is one of the ancient temple in India, at least 4, 000 â? 4250 years old.

Location:

Sabri Mala is one of the religious temples of Kerala. The Hindu pilgrimage site in the high mountain ranges of Western Ghats in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala located. Sabri Mala Temple is located on a hill at a height of 914 above sea level and is surrounded by dense forests.

Legend Related to Sabarimala Temple :

According to legend, Sabarimala is the place where Lord Ayyappan after killing the powerful demon, Mahishi had been meditating. Another legend says that this place is the home of Sabari, the tribal woman, the ardent admirer of Lord Rama and gave a fruit to Ram, after taking a bite on it was when Lord Rama visited her ashram.

Importance of the Sabarimala Temple:

Sabarimala is the largest annual pilgrimage in the world. Each year at least 4 to 50 followers, irrespective of caste, creed and position here and pay their homage to Lord Ayyappa.

Before visiting the temple, some habits have to be strictly observed by the pilgrims. A pilgrim visiting the Mandalapooja should observe austerities for 41 days. During this time, the pilgrims are not vegetarian food and refrain from carnal pleasures.

Large number of devotees are placed in different groups. Each group has a leader who leads them into the temple. Every trailer with a cloth bundle called Irumudi Kettu consists of traditional offerings. This temple has a special feature. There are no restrictions of caste and religion. Men of all ages visit the temple, but the females between the age group of 10 to 50 are not permitted to enter the temple.

Beginning and end of the Sabarimala temple

The temple is open for worship only during the days of Mandalapooja (approximately November 15 to December 26), Makaravilakku (January 14 – "Makara Sankranti") and Vishnu (14th April) and in the first five days of each Malayalam month.
