Oscars 2010: The Hurt Locker is a worthy Best Film winner

This year, Oscar will always be a highly unpredictable event, and this is the week that, in any part of the name – Jeff Bridges, Sandra Bullock, Christoph Waltz, Mo'Nique – seems to make to win, but show up.

The prevalence of opportunity-favorite in relation to any act of attention streachailt at night, for the best film : Avatar per Locker violated. Large, all-covering, never sci-fi blockbuster success for a small, intense film's thought, conceived war. The commercial art, if you will.

I am glad The Hurt Locker won out in the end. Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker in Triumph Award for the best film of its own award for best director – the first woman in Oscar history to be honored is thus achieved.

But I must admit I could not see it happening. It was one thing, be sure to reward them for the BAFTAs to Bigelow in these two categories, and thus deliver a snub to Hollywood by shutting out James Cameron and Avatar. But given the volume of money has grossed Avatar – far more than $ 2000000000 world at this point – but the Academy voters would take the broader view, the calculation of the benefits of this film to a whole industry that feels currently on a number of fronts distressed market, and act differently if the Oscars were handed over? "Follow The Money," as it seemed, was the only conceivable logic.

As it happened, were the BAFTAs Bigelow ahead and cleaned up properly.

There are two ways of looking at this result. Let us take the positive first. In his virtuosity, The Hurt Locker is in the tradition of many previous Oscar winners. It's tough even more complex, exceedingly intelligent and mature. In his study of the life of a U.S. bomb disposal unit in Iraq to make it down never cheap political points about the war, but merely states that the business involved in these soldiers, is dangerous, dark and depressing. It is the theme of heroism and heartbreaking involved skeptical about the adrenaline rush of this work are traumatizing its participants to a point where they can adjust to a normal life.

And when its director, Bigelow presents their cameras right in the heart of the bomb disposal action, the establishment of such an intense atmosphere, which you would forget to breathe for be forgiven. All in all a worthy winner for Best Film.

Theories about Avatar defeat will be broadcast for months. Was it a moody, jealous of the film snub stupendous box-office success? Well, maybe. Was it a personal slight to Cameron, whose arrogant, brusque manner alienated many people? Possibly, but Cameron is not alone in the film industry in a prickly, difficult person. The same qualities never prevented Miramax Harvey Weinstein from collecting a truckload of Oscars over the years.

I am asking now, if it's Avatar implicit promise is that 3-D to save the film industry to ride, has been found to easily Academy voters. When to go 3-D cinema, it is undoubtedly state of the art – but it's really bear that much hope for the future? Avatar was the best part of five years in the making, it is when you have a wonderful one-off that offers no easy solution for studios, the movies on an industrial assembly-line production basis release: you can not drag an avatar, as has of the three or four times a year.

Interestingly's Avatar Oscar setback comes at a time when industry insiders are voicing doubts about 3-D: will it look like a short-lived enthusiasm soon? In particular, Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland in this exceptional business done on its opening weekend, but almost no one believes his 3-D effects are a patch on Avatar. It is based on virtues other than those in 3-D.

In other awards to be cracked, Jeff Bridges finally ask Jinx Academy Awards at the fifth time, although its role as a washed-up country singer in search of salvation in Crazy Heart, a film that could not even qualify for an expanded list of 10 best films. Bridges are now certainly become an Oscar-night staple food – perhaps as early as next year for playing Marshal Reuben Cogburn in the Coen Brothers' remake of True Grit.

Sandra Bullock had abused a major role in "The Blind Side, a film by the critics, but apparently loved by Middle America – including evangelical Christian groups, whose followers to cinemas only selectively. Bullock's Oscar gives her the chance to free themselves from the thankless romantic comedies – and frankly, her time in this genre was close. It is now a serious contender for his meaty, great dramatic roles.

Christoph Waltz, whose performance in Quentin Tarantino's Basterds Ingluorious could see the best acting work throughout the year, has certainly secured a lucrative career as an actor with his Oscar. What Mo'Nique, the co-star of Precious, their success will be more of a one-off.

Aside from costume designer Sandy Powell's Oscar Britain had a disappointing night. In the last couple of weeks ago, Carey Mulligan, the pin-up of choice in our newspapers, with image editors with her on the front pages of the slightest of pretexts, as if ready to Oscar victory. But their role in an education, while appealing, hardly stood a chance against the powerhouses like Bullock and Meryl Streep in Julie and Julia. Mulligan has time on their side, they come back.

Colin Firth is restrained, delicate performance in a single person was worthy of a nomination, but could not resist again The All-American juggernaut of Bridges' campaign. The estimable Firth was little to work even before his nomination, though a worthy recognition of a thoughtful actor was.

What Sandy Powell, it is time to emphasize what they have a world-class costume we live on these shores. This was her third Oscar – she has previously won for The Aviator and Shakespeare in Love – and she has been nominated in five other occasions. Their success this year is all the more remarkable for its work largely overlooked in a movie, The Young Victoria. Powell is good news all round, we should celebrate.

Nick Park, Wallace and Gromit creator, has won four Oscars in his time, but this year was not one of them. A Matter of Loaf and Death lost in the category of animated short film, it is the first time a different animator nubbed Park has an Academy Award. Unlike 2009, in which "Slumdog Millionaire" triumphs, this was simply not Britain's year.
